Ms. Mikki’s News
8/25/17

What a great first week of school we had!  I am so proud of each and every one of them.  This week we learned our school routines, how to sit “criss cross applesauce” on the rug, waiting our turn to talk and listening to others when it’s their turn to talk, how to line up, and amazingly enough we have almost mastered walking in line...in just 2 days!  We are “learning to learn”!  Although these skills aren’t thought of as traditional “school skills”, they are essential social/emotional skills that will help us learn how to self-regulate and maintain self-control.
Shared Reading:  This week we read, The Kissing Hand and We Share Everything. Ask them if they can recall one of the bad choices that Jeremiah or Amanda made in the story (screaming, knocking over the block tower, splattering paint everywhere).

Literacy:  We made a list of “First Day Feelings”-  happy, sad, excited, scared, etc.
After reading We Share Everything, we took turns naming one thing we should share while we are at school.

Writing:  I took a handwriting sample, “This is how I wrote my name on the first day of school”.  At this point in the year, I am not concerned if they aren’t making recognizable letters.  I am looking for correct pencil grip.  We are also working on making marks in left to right progression.

Math:   We counted how many friends came to school each day using our Who’s Here Today chart.  We also practiced tag counting, by tapping each student’s head and counting.

See Saw:  I sent home an invite with a link to your child’s SeeSaw online portfolio.  This will be a place that I post pictures, reminders, individual assessments, and more.  Each child has their own private account.  I will only post their work to their private account (visible only to me and you).  I will also post pictures and videos of some of our whole group activities on our group portfolio (visible to everyone).  If you need another invite to the link, please let me know and I’ll send home another form.
               Dates to Remember:
September 4th - No School (Labor Day)
September 8th - Grandparents Day Breakfast in the FEMA shelter
September 11-12 - No School (Fall Break)

September 20th - Food for America (during class times)
