Tuesday - Wear pajamas
Wednesday - Wear wacky clothes and hair
Thursday - Wear a favorite hat
Friday - Wear crazy socks and shoes

I apologize for getting this out a little late!  We have finished up our author study.  We read If you Give a Moose a Muffin and If You Give A Pig a Pancake.  I am so  proud of my class.  It is amazing to see how far they have come.  During center time, we are learning to sit for longer  periods of time, raising our hand to have a turn to talk, and listening when it’s not our turn to talk.  During this author study, these books provided us with several new vocabulary words, and we also used prediction skills as they had to finish the sentences, “If you give a moose a muffin, he’ll want some____ to go with it”.  They were great about recalling events in the story to finish the sentence.

Math:  We finished up our unit on shapes.  We made a graph of shapes.  In the graph we identified each shape, counted how many of each shape were on our graph, and determined which one had more and which one had less.  All of my students were able to identify all 5 shapes receptively (pointing to them when I named them), and almost everyone could identify expressively (naming) at least 3 out of the 5 shapes.  Way to go!!

Science:  We enjoyed some science cooking experiences throughout the unit as well.  During these experiences we had to mix and measure ingredients.  We noticed how the properties of the ingredients changed when we mixed and baked.  They enjoyed creating their own Moose Munch for snack.

THANK YOU THANK  YOU!  PAT night at Murfin’s was a HUGE success!  You all brought in over $600 for our program.  A...MA...ZING!!!  We will be purchasing books to support our early literacy program as well as more diapers for our diaper bank.  I am so blessed to live and work in this small community with so much support.  You guys ROCK!!!

Ms. Mikki’s Classroom News
February 10th

This week:  This week we started our author study on Laura Numeroff by reading If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.  We made a list of all of the different types of cookies and then we made a class graph of our favorite cookies.  Chocolate chip cookies won by a landslide!  If you read a book about cookies to preschoolers, they are going to ask to make cookies.  That’s exactly what we did.  We mixed all of the ingredients together in a big bowl, rolled out our dough, cut out a heart shape, baked them, decorated them, and of course ATE THEM!

Literacy:  We practiced listening for a purpose, and recalling events in a story.
Vocabulary:   We continued to work on our shapes words and matching them with the correct shape.
Math:  We counted cookies and made a graph of our favorite cookies.  We talked about “most” and “least”.
Science:  We mixed ingredients, talked about each ingredients properties (egg was slimy, flour was soft, etc), and noted how the property of the dough changed when we mixed it.

Next week:  We will be reading Laura Numeroff’s story If you Give A Moose A Muffin.

Other News:

Class Valentines:  We will be exchanging valentines during our party next week.  You do not need to send in a Valentine’s Day box, but you do need to send in Valentines for each child in class.

Preschool enrollment packets:  Everyone should have picked up or received their preschool packet for next year’s enrollment.

** Please note: You DO NOT need to turn in another physical, lead screening, or a copy of their birth certificate.  You DO need to fill out both enrollment forms, provide a copy of your most recent immunizations, the transportation form, and the $60.00 enrollment fee.

Got Groceries?:  Well if you don’t, save your weekly shopping trip until next Thursday, February 16th!  Murfins Market is donating 10% of sales next Thursday between 4 and 7 to Parents As Teachers.  We hope to see a huge turnout!  Your parent educators will be there bagging groceries.  Come out and see us!

Parent Survey:  If you have not returned the parent surveys we sent home last week, please take a few moments to fill that out (front and back) and send them back to school next week. We value your feedback.

Ms. Mikki’s Classroom News
January 30th

ITTY BITTY CITY was AWESOME!  Thank you to everyone who was able to share in the fun.  We plan to have our Spring preschool field trip there on April 13th.   Stay tuned for more information.

Sweetheart Dance:  Don’t forget next Tuesday, February 7th is our Sweetheart Dance.  It will be held in the FEMA shelter (where Santa Bash was) from 6-7.  Door will not open until 6:00.  We have lots of fun activities planned including a photo booth so don’t forget to bring your camera!  We will also be hosting an UsBorne Book Fair.  They will have lots of great cash and carry books to choose from!

IMPORTANT PRESCHOOL INFO FOR NEXT YEAR:  Please be on the lookout for an email from Ms. Paula early next week.  This email will include very important information regarding preschool enrollment for next year.  Preschool enrollment packets will be passed out at the Sweetheart Dance for those who are granted a spot in our program next year.
This week:  This week we continued our Author study (Jan Brett), and read The Hat.  We continued to work on shape recognition and identification and read The Shape of Things, and Shapes, Shapes, Shapes.  We are learning that everyday objects are shapes (ex: pizza is a circle, a slice of pizza is a triangle). We have had fun looking for shapes all around us.  Please keep working on shapes at home.  Rectangle and square seem to be the ones they get confused.

Next week:  Next week we will begin a new author study on Laura Numeroff. We’ll be starting off with, If You GIve A Mouse A Cookie.  You better believe we’ll be making some cookies in class!

Valentine’s Day Bags:  We will be making bags to collect valentines in during class next week.  We are in need of plain white gift bags with handles, stickers of any kind or theme (Valentine’s day, TMNT, Batman, Shopkins, etc), and other crafty things to decorate them with.  If you are able to send any of the items in that would be wonderful! You do not need to send in a decorated valentine’s box, however you do need to send in valentines for each student in class.  You should have received a letter from your homeroom mom.

Parent Surveys-  We are sending home parent surveys.   We value your input and feedback and would appreciate you taking a few moments to fill out the survey and return it to school next week.  Thank you!

Scholastic Book Orders:  Book orders are due next Thursday, February 9th.
