Ms. Mikki's Weekly Newsletter Oct. 20

Ms. Mikki’s Classroom News
October 20, 2017

This week week:

Literacy:  We read It’s Pumpkin Time which helped us understand  the life cycle of a pumpkin.  We also talked about the features of pumpkins (color, how does it grow, what’s inside, how does it feel, size, texture).  We compared apples to pumpkins.  How are they the same?  How are they different.  They generated a list of characteristics of each.  Here are some of their responses.

Apple: Pumpkin:

Red, yellow, green Orange, white, green
They grow on trees They grow on a vine
They have a stem They have a stem
We can eat them We can eat them
They are yummy
They have seeds They have seeds
They are smooth They have ridges
They are small They are big and small

Math:  Sorting-  We practiced sorting by one attribute (ex: by color, or size).

Science:  Did you hear about the pumpkin volcano?  They had a blast opening up the pumpkin, exploring the inside of the pumpkin and creating a volcano with baking soda and vinegar.

Ms. Mikki's weekly newsletter

Ms. Mikki’s Classroom News
October 13, 2017

This weeks was Fire Prevention Week.  We enjoyed a visit from our local firefighters.  They showed us all of their gear, their fire truck, and taught us how to escape a smoky building.  We practiced “stay low and go”, in the smoke house.  The smokehouse was a little scary for some of them, but almost everyone went through the experience.  Here are some key points that they learned:

1-  Firefighters are our friends-  please don’t hide from them.
2-  Have a family escape plan.  Choose a meeting spot outside of your home.
3-  Check your smoke detector’s batteries.  Our fire department will install smoke detectors in your home free of charge if you need them.
4-  Stay low and go.  Ask them where the bad air is, and where the good air is.
5-  Stop Drop and Roll-  Ask them to show you how to put out a fire on their clothes.
6-  PRACTICE your family’s fire escape plan.

Each child brought home 2 Sesame Street booklets.  One was a coloring book for them.  The other was a family safety book for the parents.  It is a great resource for parents to read to help their child understand fire safety.  There are also several great YouTube resources.  Search:  Fire Prevention.

This week we were also finally able to use up the rest of our apples to make applesauce.  They each cut their apples up into small pieces, added sugar, cinnamon and water.  We let them cook down in the crockpot.  They had fun smashing them into sauce.  The best part was EATING the applesauce.

Recipe:
8-10 apples (cored and peeled)
Sugar
Cinnamon
½ cup water
You can let them cook on high in a crockpot overnight, or you can boil them on the stove top.
Kids love to cook and this an easy way to let them make something from scratch!

Reminders:

Late arrivals/early departures:  If your child arrives at school after 8:00 and the circle drive is already clear, you will need to walk your child into the classroom.  You will also need to stop by the office first and sign them in.  If you need to pick them up early, you will also need to sign them out at the office.

Sick Policy:  The yucky stuff has already made its  appearance this year.  We follow the Missouri Department of Health guidelines.  Those were provided to you in your preschool handbook.  The easiest way to remember is we follow a 24 hour symptom free policy rule.  Your child must be symptom free for 24 hours before they can return to school.  24 hours doesn’t mean “overnight”.  We do our best to promote handwashing and healthy practices, but illnesses are going to happen, and they are going to spread like wildfire.  Please help keep everyone healthy by following the 24 hour rule and the health guidelines.

Book Orders are due on Thursday.  You can submit your order online, or you can send in your order form and a check made to Scholastic Book Clubs (no checks).

Tuition:  Please send in October’s tuition if you haven’t done so already.  November’s tuition will be due Friday October 27th.  Thank you!  I am working on an online payment system.  I hope to have this in place very soon.

Backpacks and take home folders:  Please make sure you are checking your child’s backpack daily.  We have several children who attend daycare after preschool and their backpacks carry items necessary for both places.  Please try to leave room in the backpacks for preschool stuff too.

Change of clothes:  Please make sure your child has a complete set of clothing in a ziplock bag.  The weather will be changing to cooler temperatures (maybe), so please make sure there are season appropriate clothing in the bag.

Recess:  We will attempt to go outside for recess even on chilly days.  Please make sure to send a jacket with your child daily.  Please put their initials on the inside tag as well.

Field trip update

The weather is not wanting to play nice this week for our field trip.  For now, we are still planning on going to the pumpkin patch on Thursday.  We'll keep an eye on the forecast tomorrow.  If it looks like it's going to be a washout on Thursday, we will reschedule our field trip.

Rain date:  Wednesday, October 11th.

If we decide to reschedule, we will still have preschool as usual on Thursday.  M/W classes are welcome to attend class on Thursday (school picture day).

Stay tuned to this blog and our Facebook page for field trip updates.

As for now, we are still ON for this Thursday.
